Team Development

Team Development

The business case for team development has been proven time and again.

An extensive piece of team development research carried out by Gostick & Elton collected data from 350,000 people, as well as analysis and insight from many of the top-performing teams in the business world.

As a result of their detailed study they concluded that the key characteristics of the most successful and world-class teams are:

  • Share a common purpose

They start with and share a common purpose. The ultimate vision is very clear and there is a significant motivation to achieve the purpose shared by all members.

  • Accountability

All team members are accountable for openness, honest debate and each knows what to expect from the others.

  • Goal-setting

They use goal-setting to focus on what needs to be done and accountability to ensure that they consistently achieve their goals.

  • Support

Team members support, recognise and appreciate each other’s contribution and celebrate the team’s successes as whole.

This research also proved that strong teamwork leads to increased turnover, profits, productivity and performance via direct and indirect outcomes. Through data and interviews they found:

  • Employees who felt they were part of a motivated team reported that they were more likely to work longer hours or pick up extra work to help their team members.
  • Employees who reported feeling that they were part of a strong team felt more trust and pride in the organisation.
  • Employees who reported having friends at work were substantially less likely to want to leave the organisation.
  • Employees who felt they were part of a strong team scored much higher in all employee engagement categories.

If you could get all the people in an organisation rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, any time.

How do we work?

To tap into the huge benefits outlined above, we work with our clients to design a bespoke team development programme to respond to the needs of the team and business.

This is based on “The Five Behaviours of a Cohesive Team™”, which is an assessment-based learning experience that helps people discover what it takes to build a high-performing team. This is based on behaviors because it is rarely “what” people are doing (tasks) that get in the way of performance. It is “how” people are doing it (their behaviors) that has the biggest impact on productivity and performance.

Bringing together everyone’s personalities and preferences to develop a cohesive, productive team takes work, but the payoff can be huge – for your people, the team and the organisation.

Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and because it is so rare.

– Patrick Lencioni.

What does the programme include?

The programme helps teams understand how they score on the key components of The Five Behaviors model: Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability and Results.

The individual profiles provide an in-depth, 40 page report that shows where the team is now in relation to the five behaviors and includes a section on each person’s individual DiSC style and how this impacts on team effectiveness.

Also included are a host of tips and strategies for improving team performance, together with the start of a team action plan and you’ve got one pretty comprehensive document. In fact, the best way to understand the sheer extent of the information is to take a look at a sample.
